About

THEME: EXPLORING CULTURES

THROUGH CONTEMPORARY ART

Languages, beliefs, customs, traditions, behaviours, clothing, storytelling, art, and architecture of a region all serve as markers of culture and identity. Time has invariably influenced cultures throughout history as civilisations progress over time either through the introduction of subcultures or the integration of many.

However, culture has more relative components than what is often attributed to it under its definition. The advent of the digital world has also led to increased exposure to a multitude of cultures that shape one’s individuality. Humans subject themselves to frequent identity evolution by adapting attributes from certain regions and learning about them. Although, it must be noted that popular cultures have also led to the distortion and disruption of many demographics. Colonisation is one such example to state the point. This invites resistance to influence and fusion of distinct cultures at the same time.

In 1976, anthropologist Edward T. Hall suggested that culture was similar to an iceberg. He proposed that culture has two components and that only 10% of what is known as ‘surface culture’ is visible while the majority of 90% is hidden below the surface. This leaves great room for exploration and rediscovery of ethnic aspects that haven’t yet been placed under an artistic spotlight. By exploring this theme, participants will construct dominant narratives and examine historical relationships in contemporary times.
