A curated exhibition of contemporary sculpture designed to entice, intrigue & delight
About
Art Unbound is a curated exhibition of contemporary sculpture designed to complement our exquisite Painswick Rococo Garden’s unique history. This is a brand-new partnership between the Rococo Garden Trust and renowned curator Anna Greenacre, which sees 18 fantastic sculptors working in a variety of media, showing their work in our little piece of paradise, here in Gloucestershire.
We have taken inspiration from the intentions of the Garden’s designers in the 1740s, marrying the natural beauty and creative energy of the period to encapsulate playfulness, sensuality and freedom of form. Features in rococo gardens were included to make one smile, to surprise and even to shock. This is music to any artist’s ears and has inspired quite a number of them to produce new work especially for this gorgeous setting.
As curator, Anna has toured the length and breadth of the UK in her search to find the right sculptors for the show. She has visited them all in their studios and learnt about both their artistic process and what captures their imaginations. There are works in bronze, ceramic, glass, copper, stone, wood, wire and found objects.
Anna has also worked her magic on the overall layout of the exhibition, placing every sculpture to take advantage of the long vistas, secret spaces, open views, formal avenues and wild areas. “Around each corner there will be something to surprise and delight our visitors”, says Anna. “I have to be sensitive to the setting of each sculpture within the landscape, and to the scale, texture, form, colour and harmony between each piece.”
Throughout Art Unbound, a varied and engaging programme of events is planned, including an associated Heritage Lottery-funded project focusing on history and sculpture. For full details of the painting workshops and sculpture events we have planned, please visit: www.rococogarden.org.uk
