Joanna Pilarczyk Radecka is a Polish contemporary artist who lives in London. She has a master’s degree in Visual Art Education, University of Zielona Gora, Poland. Her work is mainly figurative, with emphasis on portraiture and city scenes.
Pilarczyk finds people endlessly fascinating. She often paints close friends as well as people she encounters in daily life. She takes her sketchbook everywhere, quickly sketching the life of the city. These sketches form the basis of her city paintings of fleeting moments, revealing individuals about their every day lives, unaware of the artist's gaze ; the resulting paintings reflect her inner dialogue with the subject.
Joanna's drop-in classes 'Painting in watercolour' and 'Drawing and Painting' are held at The Engine Room in Hale Village. The classes attract a great variety of people as all are welcome from beginners to more experienced/practising artists. Students have included animators, a film maker and writer, a singer, a photographer, a fashion designer, a couple of chefs, a tattooist, practising artists, office workers, a sculptor and builder and art teachers. Many different nationalities have taken part too -Argentinian, Korean, Italian, French, Kurdish, Mauritian, Malaysian, Spanish, Polish and of course British! Some of the students have only recently discovered painting as an escape and a way to express themselves. Joanna's teaching method is informal. She guides through encouragement of the individual's mark-making emphasising that everyone has their own style and way of seeing. She believes that doing is learning, setting the student up with all the materials they need and telling them to jump in. She then watches closely and suggests and demonstrates techniques as needed or requested.
'Art of colour' exhibition showcase the work of the art classes as a group.
The paintings exhibit a great variety of style, subject and technique.
Some work is characterised by the bold contrasting colours and gestural style, others are delicate, fleeting and moody. All represents the artists personalities. We hope you enjoy the show.
