Course begins 25/07/18. Funding available! www.campfr.com/nilsudo
NILS-UDO began his artistic life as a painter, before shifting focus to working with environmental art in the early 70's, and soon became a representative figure for the "art in nature" movement. His iconic nests, water-houses and natural altars are unmistakable, the result of a process of "bringing out" elements of the landscape, combining natural materials into new arrangements to form ephemeral artworks, natural configurations which degrade and are weathered, preserved only in the large-format photographs which he produces of his installations. His materials are alive, his works have a lifespan, are mortal.
NILS-UDO's session will explore the various aspects, possibilities and approaches to working in and with nature. Discussion and one-to-one conversations at CAMP will lead to work in the forests, mountains, valleys and pastures of the Haute Couserans region, and different works, installations or interventions in the natural environment will be created using exclusively the materials found at the respective location.
Every participant will, under the personal supportive direction of NILS-UDO or alone, set up one or even several smaller interventions. It is also conceivable that several participants work together to set up a larger work.
As NILS-UDO says: "We are not sculptors. We do not decorate nature with prefabricated objects or artifacts! The work of art is nature herself! We will respond carefully and sensitively to the respective situation we find in nature and work in and with it. The result is always a reaction to the situation encountered. It can be fleeting or even of a more permanent character."
A photographic record will be made of each work, under different lighting conditions and at different times of day. Interventions are also possible that take into account the time factor and which are specifically and exclusively designed for video. These records of the work created during this session will form a new exhibition at Fuse Art Space in 2019, with subsequent touring of the work to France and Germany.
Nestled in the French Pyrenees at 750m altitude, 10km from the Spanish border and surrounded by snowcapped peaks, waterfalls and forests, is the picturesque thermal town of Aulus-les-bains. In the town, housed in a beautifully renovated 19th century hotel, is CAMP - the first of a new breed of arts residency. In 2018, CAMP will run a series of arts, music, writing and arts-activist sessions. These are no ordinary courses - they are intense, artistic catalysts run by internationally acclaimed practitioners.
