Kesang Lamdark Retrospective

About

Rossi & Rossi, the leading London dealers in Himalayan art, will be exhibiting the works of the Tibetan artist Kesang Lamdark at Art Dubai which takes place from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 March 2009. This successful contemporary art fair is held at the beach resort of Madinat Jumeirah and will feature more than 65 galleries, representing artists from the Middle East, South and Central Asia, and the Far East, along side the work of artists from the West. Born in Dharamsala in 1963, Kesang Lamdark was adopted by a Swiss family and so grew up and was educated in Switzerland. After four years of apprenticeship as an interior architect there, he went to New York and studied first at the Parsons School of Design and then Columbia University. As a Tibetan raised in Switzerland, Lamdark is continually searching for an appropriate cultural space for himself. Having long felt like an outsider, he was eventually able to reconnect with his heritage, and his multi-cultural upbringing became the driving force behind his art. As an artist, he combines unusual materials, from hair to plastic, beer cans to nail polish and, ultimately, his life and work focus on bringing together the unfamiliar. Among the recent works to be shown by Kesang Lamdark in Dubai are a number of intriguing pieces made from plastic and chicken wire such as Model and Pilz, Truffelsnuffler and Fishbird and, reflecting his Tibetan heritage, Blue Tara, made from plastic, chicken wire and neon light. Also to be seen will be Dervish, a whirling figure made of Styrofoam, metal, plastic and chicken wire with an electromotor, and such quirky objects as his plastic Briefs. Anna Maria Rossi and her son Fabio have a deep interest not only in the art and culture of the past but also in the vibrant and innovative art being produced by Asian artists today. Well-known and respected for scholarly publications, they stage regular exhibitions at their gallery in an elegant 18th century townhouse in Mayfair, and also in New York and Hong Kong. They are delighted to be participating again in Art Dubai.
