UH Arts + Culture are delighted to host the launch exhibition for the Art:Sci Lab, a new research initiative in the School of Creative Arts.
About
Both artist and scientist have assumptions about each other and these often remain during the process of collaboration. This exhibition invites both parties to move beyond ideas of art as a tool to communicate science and towards art as a valued contributor to a collaboration. Art:Sci Lab present artworks and works-in-progress where the artists and scientists have sought to work as true collaborators.
‘Are You Seeing What I’m Seeing’ showcases a selection of long-term projects where artists and scientists enter each other’s worlds and seek to understand the nuances of each other’s disciplines. For artists, this means using their expertise to create artwork that emerges from a shared process of exchange.
The Art:Sci Lab builds on a long track record of art and science projects undertaken by practice-led researchers in the School of Creative Art. Art:Sci Lab is an innovative model in the arena of cross-disciplinary research being both driven and led by the art - reasserting art practice as a knowledge generating discipline in its own right. In its incubation year, the Art:Sci Lab established itself as a hub for collaborative work, facilitating co-creation between creative arts and the University's science community, including psychology, engineering and astrophysics. Guest artists from Lucerne School of Art and Design joined the exchange. ‘Are You Seeing What I'm Seeing’ is a result of these collaborations in various stages of progress.
The exhibition features works from Alison Dalwood, Rob Godman, Alana Jelinek, Sam Jury, Simeon Nelson and Sebastian Utzni, and is open Mon-Fri: 10.00–16.00 & Sat: 11.00–15.00.
