"These paintings are about giving an object time. Time to reflect on a fruit, some aubergines, peppers, persimmons. Time to consider their volume, their colour, the very fact that a fruit is a finite expression of fecundity, of fruiting, a wondrous moment that does not last for long. Take the food, set it aside and look at it, as so many painters have done for so many centuries. Observe the space it occupies in the world, and how it affects the space around it and its relations to objects, to other fruit nearby.
A still-life is about slowing down time. A still life is both a celebration and an elegy.
