About

The Museum of Architectural Drawings was opened in June 2013 on the Pfefferberg site in Berlin. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the house, an exhibition focuses on the collection activities and presents architectural drawings from its own holdings under the title ArchiVision . Works from the collections of the Tchoban Foundation and its benefactor Sergei Tchoban review the seemingly unlimited artistic possibilities of architectural representation.

Architecture on paper has an independent position within the graphic arts, regardless of whether it is in the service of realized or unrealized buildings. The exhibition refers to this and arranges the exhibits, which have been created over four centuries, into five time-spanning subject areas, each of which is assigned a special question.

In the first part of the exhibition, the sketch is examined, with the help of which architects put initial thoughts on paper in their personal “handwriting”. Sketches by Ferdinando Galli-Bibiena, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright, Frank O. Gehry and Álvaro Siza were selected. In the second section, with works by Herman Saftleven, Antonio Sant'Elia, Hugh Ferriss, Ivan Leonidow and Peter Wilson, the focus is on towers and skyscrapers as important forms of expression of visionary architectural design. What is special about architectural drawings is that they can simulate realities. In the third part of the exhibition, representations of urban and living environments are presented in works by Hubert Robert, Otto Wagner, Peter Cook, Zaha Hadid and Steven Holl. The fourth group is dedicated to constructional utopias on paper. Ennemond Alexandre Petitot, Jakow Tschernichow, Lebbeus Woods, Daniel Libeskind and Alexander Brodsky dealt with imaginative forms of construction. The last part of the exhibition sheds light on the great graphic ideas of the architects, which one would like to summarize with the term "world theatre". Designs, stage designs and fantasies intended for realization are on display, such as those by Charles-Louis Clérisseau, Leo von Klenze, Alexander Rodtschenko, Haus-Rucker-Co or Aldo Rossi. which one would like to grasp with the term "world theatre". Designs, stage designs and fantasies intended for realization are on display, such as those by Charles-Louis Clérisseau, Leo von Klenze, Alexander Rodtschenko, Haus-Rucker-Co or Aldo Rossi.

This exhibition, curated by Eva-Maria Barkhofen, offers the curious everything that architectural drawing can do: from the sketch to the construction and display drawing to pure fantasy, which finds its finale in the incomprehensibility of the abstract form.
