About

Johanna Melvin is an abstract painter whose work references architectural detail, sculptural poetry and the urban environment.

For this exhibition Melvin has worked with New Horizons Youth Centre to create a large-scale mosaic of ink on paper statements on the subject of homelessness, giving affirmative and testimonial collective voice to vulnerable and homeless young people. These accompany a series of more than 200 small works on paper, and a series of stand-alone large-scale abstract compositions by the artist, responding to the notion of hidden homelessness. This show follows Melvin’s recent exhibition at The House of St Barnabas, a Grade I Listed Georgian building that houses a charity helping London's homeless back into work.

Melvin has previously exhibited at London galleries including The Royal Academy of Art, Flowers Gallery and The Contemporary Art Society. Her work is held in private and public collections in London including: Whitechapel Gallery Archives; The Naggar Collection; Groucho Club collection, and John Cass Print Room.

This exhibition marks the collaboration between John McAslan Partners and New Horizons Youth Centre to address London’s growing hidden homeless. Proceeds from sales of the 200 individual small works, costing £35 each, will go to New Horizons Youth Centre, which works to create positive futures for young homeless people in the capital.
