About

ARCHETYPE by Joe Furlong Solo Exhibition Private View: Thurs 28th April 2016 Curated by Maya Mihoc (DSArts ) An upfront juxtaposition of modern comic surrealism and harsh reality dominate Furlong's work which aims to contrast social constructs of the present moment with the delicate collective nature of the human spirit. His non-linear use of comic art as a medium raises a refreshingly weird banner of what is slowly disappearing from clear view, due to rampant individualism. He wishes to challenge the position of the artist in modern society and seeks to promote collaborative activities and creative community outreach through projects such as Minesweeper Collective Co-op of which he is co-director and co-founder. He also co-runs the Undercurrents Gallery in Deptford, S.E. London and is an active member of Artcore International and Reshape. He has exhibited in London, Continental Europe and Mexico. Joe's first interactive solo venture ‘ARCHETYPE’ seeks to place the works’ explanation and reason for being firmly in the hands of the receiver, to directly affect the way in which their messages are absorbed and how they will eventually be remembered. An ‘open to interpretation’ experiment, which through logging definitions given by the public, aims to highlight the ‘unnecessary necessity' and ungrounded expectation that work should be defined by its creator in order to be digested appropriately by a receiver. “My artwork is for the people who enjoy it, I just make it and enjoy the lifestyle its production gives me. I’d rather just get on with that, rather than influencing the way in which it is taken aboard with my own personal opinions. I don't need to explain it. It is comic and surreal illustration that is totally unplanned and follows a train of thought that people can take in different ways. I am completely liberated as a result of it. This show is to celebrate this potential for differences of thought art can create between us, and to also laugh at it. I believe that this format would attract more people to the arts in general as many are alienated by concept over craft and relevance.” Exhibition opens at DSArts Viva Gallery on Thursday 28th April 2016 at 6pm. Exhibition runs until 5th April. (Cont.) “I want to see a challenge to the modern exhibitive paradigm we have grown around and are forced to either adhere to, or rebel against. Step-by-step and not an ‘us and them’. There is an all-inclusive nature of graffiti meet-ups and modern crew and collective based activity. We now have social media to help us organise and project ourselves faster which has never happened before. It is our job to master it responsibly while accepting and defeating its addictive nature . Combined with the bizarre education, auto-curation and creative freedom of autonomous space, we can fuel this new frequency for today’s emerging creatives and those that are brave enough to support it. Adding a stronger acceptance of our deserved part in the timeless push for originality, with or without definition, as well as a projection of our works sentimental value alongside it’s intellectual and financial worth would make this possible. Please prove me wrong. Everyones invited, whatever the medium”. joefurdrawing@gmail.com www.joefur.com @joefur_
