"Aqua" is the name of Cornè Theron's solo exhibition, which will be shown at Hallenbad Ost in Kassel from 5 to 14 May 2023. In keeping with the location, the artist, who comes from South Africa, is showing works with her main theme: water.
About
The approximately 40 works in this partly multimedia exhibition are dedicated to Theron's three forms of expression: paintings in oil on canvas, digital artworks and her "Essence" series, which is based on neurological data. The subjects of her paintings and digital works are people under water. For her very typical and recognisable style, Cornè Theron draws inspiration from different glass shapes as filters to achieve a particular level of abstraction. She implements this in her works through an extremely concise pixel technique, with which Theron has gained a wide following over the years.
Cornè Theron also uses water as a metaphor of the subconscious. Just as people are limited in their vision under water, they are also limited in their view of their subconscious. Much appears blurred and imprecise, not really delimitable. Theron focuses on the universality of these impressions: almost everyone has had these experiences when trying to see underwater. Likewise, everyone also knows the undefined memories of blurred dreams or imaginings. Theron depicts and creates these connections in her art.
Born in the Western Cape in South Africa, the artist has been living in Alsace, France since 2019. Her works were previously shown internationally in Paris, New York, Cape Town and London, and in Frankfurt in 2020, she celebrated a great success with the sale of all works in the exhibition with her first solo exhibition "AMA". Theron's art can be found in private collections around the globe and ARTSY CEO Mike Steib commented after purchasing one of her paintings, "Theron is an artist worth paying attention to."
