This exhibition deals with the permeability of boundaries and of the body, contrasting the intimacy of private moments with the constraints of the real and imagined infrastructure of cities and nation-states. Through sculpture, video, and sensory installation, the exhibition examines relationships between belonging and alienation, touch and restraint, intimacy and absence, tenderness and discomfort, sentiment and infrastructure. Approximate Distance spans movement across migratory waters, city streets, domestic interiors, skin and lungs: each artist deals with themes of containment and spillage from their particular local context and from their experiences of navigating within or resisting the female body.
