The culmination of a speculative research project by SPACE and the artist Rhys Coren, Apparel & Ornament explores the relationship between football kit design during the late 80s and early 90s and Acid House.

I Casual culture was a terrace scene composed of hyper-violent young men dressed in elite European sportswear. As the myth goes, the widespread emergence of Acid House between ‘88 and ‘89 inaugurated a momentary armistice amongst otherwise warring Casual firms. II The late ‘80s saw profound changes in football kit design. Conservatism in the name of solid colour blocks was out. In came trippy optics and elaborate objective graphics, wild colours, fades and layers.
