About
The walls of the gallery have been painted grey as a backdrop for a collection of shimmering paintings and two wall drawings created especially for the exhibition. The title ORACLE refers to an inner tangible deep space – a place inhabited by translucent veils of colour, permeable architectural passages, and ambiguous horizons. The paintings resonate with memories and experiences of places visited by the artist and into which we are invited to enter as places for meditative reflection.
Chromatic poignancy is at the heart of Malinowski’s paintings in what he describes as a “light-sensitive pictorial instability”. His use of interference pigments with their light bending and scattering properties echo similar strategies in pre-Renaissance gold paintings and mosaics. The new pigments create subtle shifts of flickering colour as accumulations of brushstrokes are built up across the surface of the canvas, hovering and seeping into contrasting backgrounds. The chromatic shifts encourage the viewer to shift their own viewpoint in what becomes a performative spatial experience of the work.
In the wall drawings, colour is relinquished, a white rectangle painted directly onto the wall becomes a ground across which torn strokes of a black material create an interplay between two and three dimensions. Acknowledging a discipline that reaches back to cave painting, the inflected space of the wall-drawings is inherent to our visual perception and cognition of reality, questioning the painterly spaces of the painted canvasses.
