About

Hear from ‘Another Brick in the Wall’ guest curators Simon Phipps and Darren Umney, in conversation with writer Owen Hatherley, before discovering the iconic University of Leeds campus on foot.

In the post-war period, Universities across the UK radically developed their campuses. The exhibition ‘Another Brick in the Wall’ explores the era’s striking Brutalist architecture through contemporary photographs and archival material. You can visit The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery ahead of the event to see the exhibition. Opening hours can be found here.

Simon Phipps is a photographer of post-war modernist architecture whose published works include Brutal North, Brutal London, Finding Brutalism and Concrete Poetry.

Darren Umney is a writer and researcher around the social and political contexts of architecture and design. Recent projects, commissioned by the Edinburgh Futures Institute, include Civicscope – a digital exploration of the archival, social and architectural histories of Granton, a large-scale regeneration project in North Edinburgh.

Owen Hatherley writes about politics and aesthetics for the Guardian, the London Review of Books and others. He is the author of many books, most recently Modern Buildings in Britain (Penguin, 2022) and Artificial Islands (Repeater, 2022). He is the editor of The Alternative Guide to the London Boroughs (Open City, 2020), a commissioning editor at Jacobin and the culture editor of Tribune.

‘Another Brick in the Wall’ is presented in collaboration with Arup Phase 2. Arup is a collective of 16,000 designers, advisors and experts working across 140 countries who have a focus on developing truly sustainable built environments. Phase 2 is Arup’s cultural programme of exhibitions and events that explores the intersection between art, design and engineering.

Please make sure you wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the walk.  The walk route will involve steps, please contact the Gallery in advance if your mobility is limited to discuss the route. The walk will end at Beech Grove Plaza.
