On 22 March 2023, Asia Art Archive welcomes Ade Darmawan and farid rakun from ruangrupa to the Annual Artist’s Lecture to speak about the historical conditions for, and recent debates on, collectivity and resource sharing in the arts.
About
This year’s Annual Artist’s Lecture welcomes Ade Darmawan and farid rakun from ruangrupa as our guest speakers. ruangrupa is a Jakarta-based contemporary art collective that provides platforms for exhibitions, workshops, critical thinking, and research. Most recently, ruangrupa provided collective artistic direction based on the core values of lumbung for documenta fifteen in Kassel, Germany. In this conversation, Darmawan and rakun reflect on the historical conditions that make independent art spaces necessary, as well as recent debates on collectivity and resource sharing in the arts.
A breakfast reception will be held at the library from 10–11am.
The breakfast reception and talk are both free and open to the public.
ruangrupa is a Jakarta-based collective established in 2000. It is a non-profit organisation that fosters arts thinking within urban and cultural contexts by engaging artists with other disciplines such as the social sciences, politics, technology, and media to open up critical observations and perspectives towards contemporary urban issues in Indonesia.
ruangrupa also works collaboratively on projects such as exhibitions, festivals, art labs, workshops, and research, as well as books, magazines, and online journal publications. ruangrupa participated in Gwangju Biennale (2002 & 2018); Cosmopolis at Centre Pompidou (Paris, 2017); Aichi Triennale (Nagoya, 2016); São Paulo Biennial (2014); Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (Brisbane, 2012); Singapore Biennale (2011); and Istanbul Biennial (2005). They curated SONSBEEK ‘16: transACTION (Arnhem, 2016) and were the Artistic Directors of documenta fifteen (Kassel, 2022).
