Annice Fell: 'Balancing Act'

Described by Fell as a ‘reactionary puzzle of form and spontaneous colour relationships’, this body of work is motivated by the tension of the unknown. Inspired by the techniques of decalcomania and automatism, Fell’s process begins with the application of a unique monoprint. The markings serve as gateways to each work, providing different ways of seeing and pave the way for either expansion, or complete destruction, of an initial idea. From there, instinct and impulse take over, and as the paintings progress, forms and personal meanings emerge. Studying the surface as it reveals itself to her, Fell enters into a negotiation with the markings – seeing each work as a settlement to be entered into. Resisting the desire for complete resolution, Fell seeks out the inner satisfaction that can only come with allowing the painting to remain a reaction rather than a representation.
