A special collection of Annetta Kapon's sculpture and installation works that spans three decades

About

Gallery Pado presents "Annetta Kapon: Thirty Years."

The exhibition will take place at the Pado gallery from September 24, 2022 to October 10, 2022.

The main work on display, Floor Scale, is an installation that was first shown 3 decades ago in 1992, at UCLA’s Wight Gallery, as part of Kapon’s MFA exhibition.

This is the first time the installation will come out of the time capsule to be shown to the public once again.

As in 1992, the entire floor of the gallery will be covered with analog bathroom scales and visitors will be able to walk on them.

The meaning and function of this installation are multiple: When it is seen as a sculpture, from the outside, all the scales will show zero.  With people walking around on them, the piece becomes an interactive performance in which the floor is sensitized and registers the presence of the person standing on it. "Presence" here is understood in its most pedestrian sense: weight.

The installation makes conscious reference to the minimalist tradition of repetitive modular units in systematic arrangements, the abolition of pedestals, and the activation of the floor.  It also draws on the history of ready-made, feminist art,  pattern painting, and patchwork.  By recontextualizing the private tyranny of the scale into public exposure,  (bathroom vs gallery),  the installation addresses the issue of self and gender definition through body weight.  On another level, it engages the physics of presence and absence.

The show will showcase other works from the last 30 years, including Office Ours.
