After the solo show 22—Molecular Communication by Sissel Tolaas, the second exhibition of the program year 2019 at Schering Stiftung is also dedicated to the subject of smell.

About

The Berlin-based artist Anna Virnich was invited to develop new works that move her subjective approach to smell to the foreground. The artist has developed an olfactory approach in her art over the past years. She inscribed her own bodily smell in materials like leather and worked with worn clothing where the traces of their wearers’ odors play a central role. In her installations, she also uses materials that exude natural aromas and odors, like exotic plants, beeswax, or oils. These smells, often familiar to the visitors, fill the exhibition space and favor a multisensorial experience of Virnich’s works. For this solo show at Schering Stiftung, Anna Virnich will be working together with Bettina Pause, professor for biological psychology at Universität Düsseldorf, who has studied the social function of smells.
