About
Bringing together the esoteric language of flowers, indexes of economy, and Ernst Jünger's science fiction novel The Glass Bees (1957), Anna Solal's work yields images of disarticulation between human nature and the contemporary world.
In spite of the logic of systems that propagate moments of absenteeism, it is the flower that is sign of a feverish fight for life. Bedecking the recent work of Solal, blooms are the motif of a budding collectivism that exists against all odds. But what of the rampant individualism that, like a spoiled seedling, flourishes under the auspices of hyper-networked late capitalism?
In the wreck of the present, it is perhaps the structure of The Breviary – the Christian liturgy that directs the recitation of prayer – that can offer a place for respite or the metaphor of solace. Or so the same may be thought by the users who, with detached thumbs, leave drawings in trace oils on their phone screens, their nighttime eyes fastened to the woes of faraway places.
