Anna Hulačová & Pavla Malinova’s exhibition Alien Pollinators at No 9 Cork Street, a hub for leading international galleries launched by Frieze in October 2021, introduces the figurative work of two young Czech artists, Anna Hulačová and Pavla Malinová, finalists of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award.
About
Sculptures by Hulačová, who mixes themes, concepts and materials to create works with “a deep social commentary,” are exhibited alongside figurative paintings by Pavla Malinová, who employs current and archetypal symbolism in her work, to create a dialogue between sculpture and paintings.
Hulačová and Malinová's methods are similarly characterized by schematizations formally inspired by classical, medieval, and folk prototypes. In their recent work, one can see a shared reproduction or mirroring of figures and natural organisms that come together to form one fused, hybrid whole. In a dialogue between sculpture and painting, predominant motifs arise evolving from the interconnection of figures with natural or organic matter. From muted paintings to black and white monochrome drawings of Malinová, through delicately coloured accents of Hulačová’s concrete sculptures, the composition of exhibited works gradually reveal their similarities and mirror or complement each other without losing their uniqueness. In a way, we can understand the exhibition of the works of these two young artists in London at Cork Street as a symbolic expression of the principle of coexistence, which is not only the motif of the works themselves but is also reflected in an overall a gesture of cooperation and sharing.
The exhibition is presented by hunt kastner gallery.
