About

There, where everything is in flow, where organic forms, creatures from ancient and future times, firmly devoured in each other, grow together, the distinctive pictorial language of Anna Genger manifests itself. In her second solo exhibition at upstairs berlin the German artist invites us to explore a surreal inner world from all the states of mind of which a person is capable. But they who seek naive beauty in her glittering coloured sea fail, sinking
into the indefinite ground and wandering in endless labyrinths.

With powerful colours Anna Genger combines imagined and seen elements into alienated metamorphoses, into structures whose function remains unclear. Within them she reveals her pictorial repertoire; expressive and highly concentrated at the same time. In her new works, Anna Genger abstains from clearly identifiable animals or plants, which had been the source of previous interpretations.

The current paintings and drawings, especially the multi-layered paper collages, are brighter, more transparent and more delicate than the works in her last exhibition Blood, sweat'n tears at our gallery one and a half years ago. With her complex cycle
Trick or Treat Anna Genger opens a new chapter.

Anna Genger (born 1978 in Hamburg, Germany) lives and works in Berlin. Since her graduation from the Royal College of Art in London, she has participated in acclaimed national and international exhibitions, most recently at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien and in London. Works by Anna Genger are in major collections in Europe and the U.S., such as the Bank of America Collection.
