About
UNICA by Anja Kirschner is the second exhibition in Fluentum’s two-year program series In Medias Res: Media, (Still) Moving, which focuses on modes and processes of remembering and narrating in moving image works.
Based on extensive research into the technological and aesthetic potentials of immersive media, Anja Kirschner’s new video installation UNICA, co-produced by Fluentum, deals with the resonance of historical violence in post-apocalyptic computer game worlds. By merging current post-cinematic forms of production such as motion capture with drawing and quasi-archeological procedures, Kirschner condenses UNICA into a complex and poetic exploration of new technologies and the experiential worlds that emerge from them.
Kirschner’s approach is derived from the artist and author Unica Zürn (1916–1970) and her break with normative anatomical, architectural, and linguistic structures. She transfers these methods to digital forms of production and historical filming locations, weaving them into a profoundly topical and site-specific examination.
Anja Kirschner is recipient of the Jarman Award (2011) and her works have been widely exhibited internationally, including at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Berlin; Secession, Vienna; Benaki Museum, Athens; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; n.b.k., Berlin; Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe; Artists Space, New York; Extra City, Antwerp; Transmission Gallery, Glasgow; Liverpool Biennial, and Chisenhale Gallery, London.
The solo exhibition by Anja Kirschner is part of the exhibition and project series In Medias Res: Media, (Still) Moving, which began in September 2021 with the group exhibition Time Without End. With the program series, Fluentum focuses for the first time on the political, visual, and discursive dimensions inscribed into the historically charged architecture of its premises.
Additional part of the series is a multi-part publication project. Its first issue In Medias Res #1: Histories Read Across was published in September 2021 by Mousse Publishing
In Medias Res: Media, (Still) Moving is jointly curated by Dennis Brzek, Guest Curator at Fluentum from 2021 to 2022, and Junia Thiede, Head of Exhibitions and Programs.
