Angela Blažanović | Fragments of a River

About

Central to this exhibition is the photographic series entitled ‘Fragments of a River’ which forms an anthropological study of the river Thames. The body of work aims to reveal ways of seeing the river as much as it contemplates environmental issues of plastic pollution, and ideas such as the Anthropocene. 

The photographs depict sculptural arrangements of discarded objects found along the river bank. Through the repeated act of sculpting, and also drawing on the aesthetics of Dutch still life painting, the artist forms fragmented pieces of litter into delicate compositions worth looking at. 

We are invited to delve into an experience of appreciation for old and worthless objects, which we have grown oblivious to. As we learn new ways of looking at our waste as traces of human existence, we find ourselves confronted with our immediate impact on the environment; and in particular the river which is at the central core of the City of London.

The exhibition will feature video and sound elements to expand on the thoughts embarked in the photographic works. The viewer is invited to fully immerse themselves into the experience of the river and its ever changing character.

Angela Blažanović (b. 1995, Germany) graduated from BA (Hons) Photography from London Metropolitan University in 2019. Recent exhibitions include: Cream 2019, University of Brighton; Unsigned, Bartle Bogle Hegarty, London; AOP Student Awards Exhibition, Wex Photo Video, London; Free Range 2019, Old Truman Brewery, London and The Cass Summer Show, 2019, The Sir John Cass School of Art, Architecture and Design, London.

In 2019 Blažanović was announced the winner of the Free Range 2019 Award and the Owen Rowley Prize. In addition, Blažanović’s work has been reproduced in print in Uncertain States, Issue 30 and Wallpaper* Magazine; and has been written about online in Port Magazine, The Guardian and Elephant Magazine.
