About

As the founder of Pop art, Warhol was a true visionary, still influencing much of our relationship to celebrity and culture today. His parents were economic migrants to America and he believed in the power of democracy to reach every aspect of our lives, including art. Through experimentation, collaboration and a unique candidness, he had a profound impact on his adopted city of New York and later on the entire world.

In homage to his great spirit, we have turned over all of the spaces at Firstsite to emerging artists to explore his legacy. We invite you to spend time across the entire building discovering, making and playing as Firstsite goes Pop!

ARTIST ROOMS On Tour is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the Art Fund, making available the ARTIST ROOMS collection of international modern and contemporary art to galleries throughout the UK.

ARTIST ROOMS is jointly owned by Tate and National Galleries of Scotland and was established through The d’Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Art Fund and the Scottish and British Governments.

Alongside works from the ARTIST ROOMS collection, which form the core of the exhibition, we are grateful for loans from Anthony d’Offay’s private collection, The Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and a private Colchester collection.
