About
An Invisible Message awaits at every turn in life, but it often goes unnoticed, unseen and untried. Perhaps we have become too busy and occupied to discern the signs the universe tries to reveal and provide. Japanese artist Reina’s inaugural solo exhibition in Europe, presented at JPS Gallery Paris, beautifully captures the elusive essence of the universe’s invisible messages.
There is always more to the world than meets the eye, and Reina found herself wondering if the birds perched on the telephone poles were telling her something or whether the flowers in the garden were smiling at her. Reina was inspired to explore the sensory engagement and intrinsic connection between humans and the world around them, after observing her child’s genuine interactions with the environment. She believes that adults have grown to think that they understand the world, but perhaps children, with their curiosity and openness, know more than we do. Reina’s newly painted series of evocative paintings and sculptures will feature her beloved characters, such as Earthmom, Suntos, Atomos, Dreamrock, and Mee. Each character plays a significant role in demonstrating the importance of rebuilding the relationship between humans and the natural world. Consequently, each painting is deeply imbued with a sense of innocence and wonder, encouraging viewers to tap into that childlike curiosity and see the world anew.
In an effort to articulate the intangible, Reina has created a series of soul-stirring artworks that aim to give form, voice, and presence to the invisible aspects of our surroundings. From mystical creatures to fantastical greeneries that uniquely blend reality and imagination, Reina’s meticulous brushstrokes, intricate details, and clever use of colour and texture bring to life the hidden dimensions that coexist with our visible reality. Each piece represents the artist’s exploration into the unseen, unheard, and unfelt facets of our existence, inviting viewers to engage with the invisible realms that shape our world.
About Reina (b.1989, Japan)
With an interest in myths and folktales from around the world, she would transfer the wisdom derived from these stories onto her canvases. Feeling a great sense of concern towards modern society's tendency to rationalise and streamline everything in this world of science and technology, Reina believes that people can live a more fulfilling life if they unlock the infinite wisdom that myths and folktales carry. In the Mythology series, natural phenomena and objects were personified, while the Embrace series expresses how the giving and receiving relationship between humanity and all beings are inextricably linked. Her most recent Genesis series focuses on creation myths and their fundamental role in our understanding of how this world works.
Born in Toyama, Japan, Reina attended the University of Toyama from 2011 to 2013, earning a degree in Plastic Arts and a graduate degree in Art and Design. Her works have been exhibited in numerous museums and institutions across Japan, including Hamasaki Museum of Contemporary Art, Osaka; Furusato Museum of Art,Toyama;Tsukuba Museum of Art,Tokyo;Art Complex Centre, Tokyo; and O Museum,Tokyo, to name a few.
