Join artist Carol Goodchild in exploring the work of a celebrated and controversial group of Victorian artists
About
Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais and Holman Hunt were young artists in mid-nineteenth century England who wanted to produce narrative paintings that were full of bright colours and intricate detail, promoting their ideal of Truth to Nature.
Their chosen subject matter included imagery from the legends of King Arthur, Shakespeare and the poetry of Dante, Keats and Tennyson as well as personal expressions of their dreams and beliefs. The critic, John Ruskin championed their work and brought it to public notice through his writings and patronage. Their individual careers took very different paths, providing for us particular insights into their, often, complex and unconventional lives and the times in which they lived. The paintings will be the basis of the lecture which will examine and analyse key works.
