An Exploration of Film Noir Led by Andrew Spicer, Followed by Screening

About

What is film noir? Why do films such as Double Indemnity, Out of the Past or Touch of Evil continue to disturb, provoke and fascinate almost 70 years after they were first released? This study day explores film noir as a complex and contested global phenomenon stretching from 1940 to the present. Discussion will be based on short extracts from key films from different periods and various countries. This will be followed by a classic noir screening Scarlet Street at 5.30pm. Dr Andrew Spicer teaches at the University of the West of England and is the author of several books on film noir.
