Inspired by subjects around him; still-life taken from objects in the house to gardens and landscapes, Jonty Cutting's style is a mix of realism and impressionism.
He chooses to paint in watercolour because he likes the instant effect that is not easily corrected. This requires him to repeat a subject which he tries to interpret in different ways each time. For him, watercolour has a will of its own which can be manipulated within limits, but the paint ultimately decides where it will go.
He likes the transparency of watercolour and the way it mixes freely on the paper which always gives it an unpredictable effect.
