An Emergency Exit Sealed Shut

This exhibition begins with a plot twist: an emergency exit, sealed shut. In the first instance, a crisis. Fashioned as a safety measure, the emergency exit should be able to be relied upon, the last resort and a first point of call wrapped up into one. But when that falters, when the structure supposedly there for your protection fails you and there is no possibility of escape, what next?  

This two person exhibition will flirt with the line between playfulness and severity. Curated by acting director Isabelle Sully, the exhibition will feature the narrative photo sequences of Hunter alongside Hubbard’s sculptures and early video works, including the multi-channel video Eye Ops (2013). Significantly, this is the first institutional exhibition for Hubbard outside of Australia, and the first time Hunter’s work has been exhibited in the Netherlands since the 1970s. In situating Hubbard's contemporary practice alongside Hunter’s, An Emergency Exit Sealed Shut will revive the historical context of the feminist work that has been done before us.
