An afternoon with The Gardening Drawing Club

As the year comes to a close, we invite you to gather in the Artsadmin Canteen for a hot cup of organic herbal blend, meet fellow aspiring and accomplished growers and share ideas through drawing and conversation. The subject of our drawings will be biome: forrest – a semi-permanent installation by Zoë and sound artist Keir Vine, and our conversations will explore questions raised by Zoë’s residency and The Gardening Drawing Club:

• Are you interested in vegetables, cooking or growing and how these could become part of your daily life?
• What is deep ecology? 
• In the face of devastating biodiversity loss, how can we nurture the wellbeing of our inner gardens and extend this care into the living world of which we are a part?  
• How can we become more implicated in the continuous growth, protection and flourishing of the earth we choose to tend, however small, polluted and degraded it might currently be?  

Access information

• The Artsadmin Canteen is accessible to wheelchair users and welcome guide, hearing, emotional support and assistance dogs.
• there are wheelchair accessible toilets. Read more about Accessibility at Toynbee Studios.
• All toilets at Toynbee Studios are gender neutral.
• There is outdoor and distanced indoor seating.
• A relaxed performance kit with yoga mats, blankets, cushions and ear defenders is available.

About The Gardening Drawing Club

The Gardening Drawing Club is a series of unique events with a holistic approach offering free access to arts and horticulture in Britain. With monthly happenings, The Gardening Drawing is hosted in a broad range of locations, from art centres to community gardens and temples; the events range from workshops to talks and experiences. Veganic gardening methods are employed through The Gardening Drawing Club, advocating for gentleness and compassion while supporting seed sovereignty, racial, climate and land justice and reparation, biodiversity, and animal liberation. 

The Gardening Drawing Club has a shared mission to integrate the joys of gardening and drawing in others’ lives for individual and community well-being. The project was founded in 2021 by artist Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck.

About Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck

Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck (b.1990, Strasbourg, France) is a transdisciplinary artist and cultural practitioner based in rural Oxfordshire. 

Her practice, composed of painting, drawing, installation, sculpture, film, photography, writing and publishing, often conceals ecological messages rendered in soft and delicate methods. In several of the artist’s projects, interaction with the environment and others plays a central role. Recent solo exhibitions include Dreaming about Tomorrow at Nidi Gallery and Caring & Tender -A Painter’s Photographic Diary at Terrace Square Photo Tokyo. Recent group exhibitions include One Foot in The Sky at Contemporary Sculpture Fulmer and New Nature at Paterson Zevi Gallery. 

InOtherWords Imprint, Chose Commune, Jane & Jeremy and Editions Ulmer have published books on her practice. In 2014, Johanna founded the positive and collaborative cultural project Poetic Pastel. In 2018, the artist co-founded the publication series Journal du Thé – Contemporary Tea Culture. In 2021, Johanna founded The Gardening Drawing Club. 

Coming from a family of passionate gardeners, Johanna received horticultural training in France and England, and she now tends to her two veganic allotment plots in Oxfordshire. Since 2018, she has studied Ikebana at the Ohara School. In 2021, she began her training in Social and Therapeutic Horticulture.
