About
Amongst Giants
‘In power’? Surely an oxymoron in a world where all are equal? Power corrupts! Imposing its overarching presence in the minds of the ‘powerless’. In ‘Amongst Giants’ Tim Carson uses paint, wood, metal, plastic and film to turn the tables on these power hierarchies, that allows you, the visitor, a moments contemplation and presence as a giant amongst giants. Even if this is only for those few fleeting moments you spend with Tension Gallery.
The free standing and wall mounted works combine the absurd and seemingly mundane to produce ‘mini’ vignettes and stories that explore escape, discovery, place, space, redundant machines and play. Amongst other things.
Carson originally trained in jewellery design at Epsom School of Art, graduating with an HND in 1988. Although jewellery making has predominately been the backbone of his practice, in terms of scale and craft, Carson has also always employed and incorporated other art practices, e.g. film, collage, performance, painting, to broaden the scope of the questions he is asking within his practice.
Carson has showed work internationally, with solo exhibitions in USA, Germany and Netherlands. He is also the long standing vocalist of punk band Scrotum Clamp.
