Amelie is a London-based artist and textile designer who, for the first time at RuptureXIBIT Gallery, will be exhibiting a unique collection of contemporary artworks, painted in handmade oak gall ink on pure linen.
About
Visitors can expect to view ten wall-hung artworks including three large-scale pieces as well as a display of oak galls. The materials required for extracting the ink and a note of its history. Also, a selection of Amelie’s linen cushions, hand painted in oak gall ink, will be shown.
Each individual artwork starts with a solid wash of oak gall ink and It is only through the removal of the ink that the paintings start to be revealed. The works are abstract yet contain a bold geometric structure. Some linen pieces have been cut and stitched back together to look like relics from the past and in some instances, threads have been left deliberately exposed on the edges of the canvases, as if fragments of historic cloth or textile.
Amélie seeks the opportunity to inspire others to further consider their part in the global industries of art and textiles. Challenging ideas and preconceptions about what traditional artists’ materials might be, where they come from, and how they are derived.
In this exhibition, Amelie aims to draw people’s attention to the subtlety and beauty of natural dyes and inks, and how stunning it is as a medium to work with.
