About
Alya Hatta (b 1999, Malaysia) is an interdisciplinary artist based between London and Kuala Lumpur . Hatta graduated from her BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths University of London before finding herself in the MA Painting Course at Royal Collage of Arts. Hatta has exhibited internationally in London, Milan, Tokyo amongst others and collaborated with JW Anderson in 2021 on custom sneaker commission and Dazed New Gen GAP in 2020.
The works in “Up On Stilts” are a hybrid of mythology and reality, drawing on both real memories and tales that blur the lines between fiction and reality. They serve as images that represent significant memories in Hatta’s life that have been altered by time and repeated story telling, as we relocate, meet new people and share new experiences. The depiction of a moment through paint serves as something that is anecdotal, creating a new moment that is truth in its feeling and purpose rather than factual.
Hatta uses the dynamism of colour form, sound and space to explore the realm of digital and physical in representing her south asian identity and to portray the colourful intimacies of the diaspora human condition. She takes inspiration from the communities of both her South London and Kuala Lumpur residencies as well as Southeast Asian Mythology to create alternate realities in an attempt to find new spaces in which she can call home.
