Martin Smith's 'Machines in the Trees' are carefully crafted kinetic sculptures which investigate myths associated with trees. The work is on show at St Mary Magdalene, Gedney, as part of Altered Festival 2015, celebrating contemporary art in historic churches across Lincolnshire.
'Machines in the Tree' was orginally commissioned by artsNK for the Zygote festival (2013), which celebrated the history of the seed industry in Sleaford. Through these kinetic peices Smith explores myths associated with trees. Each carefully crafted tree has its own form and sound.
The installation is part of Altered Festival 2015, which brings internationally renowned artists to historic churches across Lincolnshire. The Festival marks the conclusion of Altered: Contemporary Art in Ancient Churches – a pioneering initiative masterminded by partners the University of Lincoln, the Diocese of Lincoln and artsNK – which has for years challenged audiences to view historic church buildings in innovative ways through new artworks.
