& Ettore Sottsass

As a designer he was convinced that objects needed to have sensuality. The Italian designer created a new genre where his creations possessed a spirit that went beyond the functional.

Alpenglühen brings together contemporary art which plays with the notion of functionalism versus the romantic, idealistic and visionary.

“when I was young, all we ever heard about was functionalism, functionalism, functionalism. It’s not enough. Design should be sensual and exciting.”

“A chair must be really important as an object, because my mother always told me to offer my chair to a lady”

— Ettore Sottsass Jr.
