We are reflecting on the passage of time at KMA Gallery with our end-of-year exhibition Almanac, which also marks our 11th anniversary.

About

Artists Alison Coaten, Annabel Munn, Carolyn Bew, Helen Phoenix, Jemma Gowland, Kate Richardson and Phil Jolley have created works based on this theme, each presenting their own unique take.

Alison Coaten created two sculptural works specifically for Almanac, Fiadh and Harvester, inspired by different almanacs and myths from the natural world. Taking her typical work in a different direction, ceramicist Annabel Munn presents a series of tactile, orb-like sculptures reflecting on a year in her life. Artist Carolyn Bew has introduced a new series of large-scale original drawings that recall the technicolour experience of childhood against the backdrop of the everyday, as well as expanding upon her existing body of surreal etchings.

Continuing to highlight the importance of our bird companions, Helen Phoenix has unveiled a new series of regal egg tempera paintings, presenting her delicate creatures in the style of traditional icon paintings. Jemma Gowland’s new sculptures draw upon her own family history, using imagery from a collection of fairy tale books illustrated by a relative at the turn of the 20th century.

Inspired by the wild coastlines of the West Country where she calls home, painter Kate Richardson has produced a series of transportative paintings that take you to these mystical and dreamlike landscapes. Finally, ceramicist Phil Jolley has incorporated text and numerology into his relic-like vessels, created through sprig molds of historic architectural details.

Also on show are new paintings by David Hayward and Dawn Stacey, prints and an original painting by Kellie Miller, sculptures by Jackie Summerfield and Jessie Mooy, and ceramics by Paul Wearing, among many more.

These artworks are on view curated across two floors at Kellie Miller Arts, 20 Market Street, Brighton.
