About
The director of CNB Gallery, Rebecca Lidert, is delighted to present The Sun Popped, an exhibition of new works by the emerging Canadian painter Ally McIntyre.
Challenging the idea that there can be a ‘perfect’ in painting, in this exhibition McIntyre blends traditional genres, iconographies and painterly processes together to create an alternative mythology in a new painterly age.
Shifting focus away from heliocentric belief systems, which place the patriarch at the center of worship, McIntyre instead looks to nature, animals and the relationship between the Moon and the Sun as objects of power and worship. Recognising the moon as a traditional symbol of femininity, the show explores romantic notions of the end of the sun whilst alluding to the painter’s personal opinions on contemporary feminist activism.
Using a mix of acrylic, glitter and spray paint on a collection of ten paintings, which range from small to large-scale canvases, McIntyre displays her ability to work playfully with a range of materials whilst skilfully crafting striking, confident and inquisitive pieces of work.
Says Rebecca Lidert: ‘Experiencing Ally’s paintings you understand what a confident painter she is. Her work is empowering. Her visual language has the conviction of a well accomplished artist. Her use of colour and composition are unusual, unique and bold.’
