In 1967, poet Richard Brautigan imagined a coming future, “where mammals and computers / live together in mutually / programming harmony.”
About
The resulting proliferation of these technologies has now radically altered every area of life. Borrowing its title from Brautigan’s poem, All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace addresses one of the most pressing issues of our time—the impact of artificial intelligence—by proposing alternative directions for its future and how it changes the relationship between the human and non-human. Presenting a broad range of art forms, including visual art and performance, this exploration offers alternatives rooted in indigenous belief systems, and feminist, queer, and decolonial imaginaries. Neither the utopia imagined by Brautigan nor the dystopia feared today, the alternative approaches proposed by artists can inform the next generation of AI, grounded in diverse conceptions of technology, cognition, and life. Along with the exhibition, All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace consists of a performance program and accompanying publication.
