There is a shrub which grows up to two metres high and is often mistaken for a weed. It has tiny light green leaves and small delicate pretty pink flowers. This plant produces one of the most culturally significant and complex natural dyes.
Lucille Junkere joins us to talk about this plant and her recent residency ‘All Blues’ at the William Morris Gallery in London. The theme for Lucille’s residency was inspired by the indigo dye relationship between William Morris and dye chemist Thomas Wardle. She also explored the association of indigo dye with slavery and imperialism and its cultural significance today.
Lucille will be sharing the pages of her own indigo dye sample book which was displayed at the gallery.
