A retrospective of the American painter Alice Neel (1900-84) will open this July at the Whitechapel Gallery. She emerged from the Social Art" of the 1930s, to become - in an art world dominated by abstraction - the supreme portraitist and "collector of souls" of postwar New York. Her imagery always began with a very direct drawing, often straight onto the canvas. Neel's difficult, in some ways heroic life was beautifully evoked in the recent film directed by her grandson (and screened here last summer)
