‘An Animal A – Z’, Alice Pattullo’s new body of work, will be on display alongside her sketchbooks of illustrative and design inspirations, black and white preliminary drawings, and colour influences from 1950s Christmas cards at Mascalls Gallery until 20 February 2016.

About

At 27, Alice Pattullo is already a prolific artist. An illustrator, her work is firmly anchored in the very best traditions of twentieth century practice and design. Her work is delicate, detailed and beguiling, despite often including sinister tales and humorous symbolism.

Research is at the heart of Pattullo’s personal practice, and her work has a focus on visual elements from folklore, traditions and superstitions from Great Britain and beyond. Adding a modern humorous twist, while consciously paying homage to British twentieth century artists such as Edward Bawden, Enid Marx, Barnett Freedman and Barbara Jones, Pattullo creates nostalgic and vibrantly aesthetic illustrations and limited edition prints.

‘An Animal A – Z’, Pattullo’s new body of work, has taken every spare moment she has had over the last two years, between countless commissions and many personal projects. She includes not only well loved animals, but also those which are less known – who knows anything about an Okapi, an Uakari or a Xantus? These three brightly coloured screenprints are displayed alongside the rest of the alphabet, Pattullo’s sketchbooks of illustrative and design inspirations, black and white preliminary drawings, and colour influences from 1950s Christmas cards. Together these offer an understanding of the illustrative process, from inspiration and research to drawing, design, colour choices and edition printing.

On Saturday 30 January 2016 from 4pm, Alice Pattullo will be discussing her inspiration, illustration and printmaking with us.
