About

It builds a portrait of a young, determined artist and the moments that shaped her unapologetic character and talent. Get an insight into one of the twentieth century's most respected painters and how she distinguishes herself in a man's world.

There will be a Q&A session at the end of the talk for Alexander to answer public questions.

Alexander Nemerov, the author of many books on painting and photography, has lectured on art in museums and universities around the United States and Europe. In 2017 he gave the 66th annual Andrew W. Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery of Art, becoming the first Mellon Lecturer to speak on American art. He appears the 2018 HBO documentary about the contemporary art market, The Price of Everything. From 2015 to 2021 Nemerov served as chair of the Art and Art History Department at Stanford, where he is the Carl and Marilynn Thoma Provostial Professor in the Arts and Humanities.

Fierce Poise: Helen Frankenthaler and 1950s New York (Penguin, 2021) has been praised as “thrillingly alive” (Vogue), “masterful” (Los Angeles Review of Books), “lyrical, powerful” (Susan Stamberg, NPR), “gorgeous” (Newsday), and as a “collage-like narrative that conjures the glamor and bustle of postwar New York City” (O, The Oprah Magazine).

The Talk and Q&A will take place online over Zoom. Ticket holders will be sent a link in advance.
