About
FRANK FLUEGEL GALERIE is pleased to present a major exhibition of the renowned American artist Alex Katz entitled "Alex Katz - When the going was good" from June 12, 2025 to July 31, 2025. This exhibition offers a fascinating opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of one of the most influential representatives of contemporary painting and to explore the development of his work in the context of his best years.Alex Katz, known for his clean lines, vibrant colors and ability to depict everyday scenes and portraits with a timeless elegance, has created a multitude of significant works throughout his career. The exhibition at the FRANK FLUEGEL GALLERY focuses on a period that Katz himself describes as "the best years", a time when his artistic signature was particularly concise and expressive.
Among the works on display are some of his most important works, which impressively reflect his artistic development and his variety of themes. These include the portraits "Elizabeth" and "Olivia", which impress with their simple elegance and precise depiction of the personalities. "Elizabeth" shows an elegant woman in a quiet moment, while 'Olivia' captivates with its vibrant color palette and clear composition. Both works are excellent examples of Katz's ability to capture personality and atmosphere in minimalist form.
Another highlight of the exhibition is "White Lotus", a work that captivates with its calm colors and meditative mood. The painting shows a white lotus flower captured in a simple yet powerful image - a symbol of purity and tranquillity that is typical of Katz's interest in nature and still life. The exhibition is complemented by "Spring", a vibrant work that captures the freshness and awakening of nature in spring. With its vibrant color palette and dynamic forms, "Spring" conveys a sense of optimism and new beginnings.
In several interviews Alex Katz has given throughout his career, he repeatedly emphasizes the importance of simplicity and clarity in his art. He talks about how he loves to portray everyday scenes and people because to him they have a universal beauty. Katz once said: "I want to capture the essence without overloading it. Less is often more." This philosophy is clearly reflected in his works, which have a timeless appeal due to their reduction to the essentials.
The exhibition "When the going was good" is therefore not only a retrospective of Katz's artistic work, but also a tribute to a phase in which he perfected his artistic style and depicted his themes with great clarity and precision. Visitors have the opportunity to follow the development of an artist who knows how to transform the everyday into extraordinary art.
