About
The American artist Alex Katz will be 97 years old on July 24. FRANK FLUEGEL GALERIE, with locations in Nuremberg and Kitzbühel, is showing the exhibition "Seasons - Autumn - Spring".
The title of the exhibition refers to the parallel exhibition of four new paintings by Alex Katz at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). On July 4, 2024, 4 monumental paintings will be exhibited in the atrium of the museum under the title "Alex Katz - Seasons". The artist's Seasons series describes the changing of the seasons, depicting the vibrant colors of spring, summer and fall to the stark palette of winter. The prints include the yellow-toned Autumn series, the cool blue-toned prints Tree 8 and Tree 10, and three newly released prints Spring. These four paintings at MOMA are part of a new series of more than 100 paintings that Katz has been creating in his New York studio since 2022. The artist draws inspiration from his immediate surroundings, be it a lone tree he encounters on his way home from the movies on Houston Street or the lush landscape of Lincolnville, Maine, where Alex Katz has spent his summers since 1954. "The sensation of color is what I wanted," he says. "It's the feeling of seeing."
Alex Katz - "Seasons Spring" is a testament to the artist's ever-evolving approach to interpreting the natural world. He often begins with photographs taken with an iPhone and smaller painted sketches, which he then transforms into large-scale compositions. In many cases, Katz removes the horizon, the absence of which, combined with the large scale of the paintings, creates an environment without a clear beginning or end. Katz often completes an entire painting in a single morning. Although he repeatedly revisits and reworks the theme of the four seasons, he approaches each canvas as a new project. Katz cheerfully describes his process as "holding your breath and hoping for the best".
The new print Spring is part of a whole series of landscape paintings that focus on the foliage of trees throughout the seasons. The prints Autumn 1-6 by Alex Katz were published in spring 2024 alongside the equally new signed and numbered portfolio "White Lotus".
Alex Katz is particularly famous for his figurative paintings: The son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, he was born in New York in 1927. As a pioneer of Pop Art, he always concentrated on the essentials and explored simplified forms and high-contrast color composition early on. His wife and muse Ada Katz is a frequent subject of his pictures, which are also available as screen prints under the title "Red Hat Ada", for example. His art is diverse, but always has beauty as its central theme. The artist can now look back on more than 200 solo and around 500 group exhibitions; his diverse works are part of over 100 collections worldwide. Alex Katz lives and works in New York and Maine.
In 2024, Alex Katz's exhibitions include the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, during the Venice Biennale at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, and at the Museum Brandhorst in Munich.
