About

firstsite presents a new exhibition of recent films by the Berlin-based artist Aleksandra Domanovic.

The exhibition explores the complex ways in which the media and technology have shaped the postwar environment of Domanovics native country, the former Yugoslavia. From yu to me (2013?14) is a new film that looks at the history of the Internet domain ?.yu? against the backdrop of the violent dissolution of the Yugoslavian state in the early 1990s. This will be shown alongside 19:30 (2010?11), a video installation that brings together imagery from two models of shared experience popular in the former nation: an anthology of television news themes from state-owned broadcast stations, and original and found footage from rave parties across the region. These are set against an electronic music soundtrack that has been sampled and remixed from the original news themes.

The exhibition runs concurrently with Domanovic's new commission for Glasgow International at the Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow (4 ? 21 April 2014). From yu to me was commissioned by Abandon Normal Devices (AND), Rhizome and the Fridericianum, Kassel. New publications based on her original research for From yu to me and 19:30 will accompany the exhibition.
