About

Albert H Barnett's biro drawings of Birmingham in the 1930s and 1940s were discovered by Compton Verney; a Warwickshire-based art gallery, after an appeal for Folk Art. The biro sketches depict scenes from Birmingham's past, showing old buildings, vehicles and even newspaper obituaries. Details in the drawings include signs on buildings, the names of companies long gone, methods of transport and street views now vanished under a sea of re-development. Each individual piece contains hand written details of its time and composition and who the drawing was for.
