Contemporary art collides with metal culture in this unique exhibition created by artist Alan Kane and commissioned as part of Home of Metal.
About
Kane has conceived of the spacious and elegant Floor 3 Galleries as a domestic environment, playfully confounding notions of public and private space and expectations of scale, purpose and value. Metal as material and “Metal” as a global cultural phenomenon interplay throughout this part-domestic and part-institutional space. A Metal ‘Lounge’ brings together works by contemporary artists, loosely themed around M(m)etal or with a domestic bent. Participating artists include Jeremy Deller, Una Hamilton Helle, Des Hughes, Jim Lambie, Sarah Lucas, Jessica Mallock, Mike Nelson, Simon Periton, David Shrigley, Mark Titchner, Hayley Tompkins, Cathy Ward, Charlie Woolley, Eric Wright and Kane himself who is producing new sculptures, paintings and photographs especially for the exhibition. Collections belonging to Midlands metal fans are also on display within domestic environments. These include Kayleigh’s collection focusing around US band Halestorm and 9 year old Millie’s collections of skulls and rocks.
Home of Metal will present four further exhibitions in partnership with organisations in and around Birmingham. These include Black Sabbath – 50 Years, at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, Monster Chetwynd at Eastside Projects, Ben Venom at mac and Przemek Branas at Centrala, demonstrating Heavy Metal’s reach into all corners of culture through explorations of fantasy, chaos, performance and fandom.
