Garvey|Simon is pleased to present Inhabited Landscape, a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Maine artist, Alan Bray.

About

OPENING RECEPTION: April 30, 2025 from 5-7pm at 16 East 79th Street NYC

Rooted in the rural environment of central Maine, Bray’s work explores the subtle imprints of human presence within the natural world. Using casein on panel, his meticulously detailed paintings invite quiet contemplation of the relationships between land, time, and memory.

Though often devoid of people, Bray’s landscapes suggest unseen narratives—footpaths, farm fields, snowmobile tracks, and clusters of trees shaped by human activity. These elements reveal a world where nature and culture intersect in poetic tension. His visual language is spare yet intricate, drawing viewers into intimate scenes that are both timeless and particular.

This exhibition highlights Bray’s continued interest in place, perception, and the layered histories embedded in landscape. The result is a body of work that is at once deeply personal and broadly resonant—subtle meditations on presence, absence, and the ever-evolving relationship between humans and the land they inhabit.
