About
Akos Birkas (born 1941 in Budapest) studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest from 1959 through 1965. Since the 1990s his paintings have led him to become one of the main representatives and influencers of contemporary Hungarian painting.
The attempt to make complex social relationships representable in new, uniquely assembled networks of meaning permeates Birkas' oeuvre. Accordingly, the focus is not merely the desire for representation, but the potential to make this new and specific context representable in the first place. His paintings are devoted to the portrayal of persons, and therefore the inherent social circumstances to which people are exposed.
On the occasion of Akos Birkas 75th birthday, the exhibition „Im Wandel" features his body of work. Next to his important works from the 1990s we will also present a new wall installation.
